Shya received the Indo German Academic Exchange fellowship (DAAD) to carry out part of her PhD work in Germany. She was also a recepient of the government of India Council of Scientific and Industrial research fellowship. In her PhD thesis she studied biophysical characterization of enzyme ß-galactosidase and lymphocyte agglutinating lectin from Phaseolus vulgaris. She subsequently held postdoctoral position at UMASS Medical School, Worcester, MA and North Carolina State University at Raleigh, NC. She has over ten years of experience in protein expression, purification and crystallization. She has published numerous papers in membrane protein structure, enzyme kinetics, RNA protein interaction and structure based drug design.
